Last Time Out

Last time out, London City Lionesses suffered a narrow defeat in their Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion in Bromley.

Opposition Overview

London City Lionesses are looking to cement their top six spot heading into the new year this weekend, and a win over Leicester City would confirm that.

We currently sit on 15 points after 10 games, with five wins and losses in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

The Foxes sit lower in the table, in 10th, with one win in the current campaign.

Despite this, Passmoor’s side have already tasted victory over London City this season, beating us 1-0 at the CopperJax Community Stadium in the Subway Women’s League Cup back in October.

During Friday's press conference, Leicester boss Rick Passmoor confirmed that Hlín Eiríksdóttir will miss out on this weekend’s game with a hamstring injury, while Noémie Mouchon nears a return to action for the Foxes.

On London City’s side, Jocelyn Prêcheur confirmed that Poppy Pattinson will soon be back in training and should return alongside Corinne Henson for the second half of the season. Maddi Wilde, Daniëlle van de Donk and Emily Orman have all recently made their first trainings with the team. Sofia Jakobsson is working hard to return but still has some pain in her back.

There is only one player at London City who has ties to Leicester City, Sophia Poor, who played for the Foxes in 2022-23.

There are plenty of international connections between the two sides, with both sides having internationals from Australia, Finland and English youth levels.

Jocelyn Precheur’s Press Conference

On our response to the Brighton defeat:

“A lot of frustration, which is a good point. It means the players, like me, are convinced that we could’ve done better against Brighton.

“We had a lot of talking, good analysis, and lessons to take from this game and improve for the next one.

“Training has been really good this week, everyone was very motivated and is ready to respond.”

On Izzy Goodwin’s new contract:

“It was very important for me and the club for different reasons. First, because developing players is a big part of the strategy of the club.

“I’m fortunate because I have a lot of talented players who will reach the top level, Izzy is one of them. She still has so many things to improve but is very talented.

“She’s got good mental strength, she’s a hard worker, and this is what I want to build the team with. I’m happy she decided to stay and trust us with her development."

An assessment on the first half of the season:

“If I’m honest, it was hard to have a clear projection as this is my first season in the WSL.

“I’ve now competed against everybody, and I can say now I have a clear picture of the level of this team, and I can say I’m not disappointed.

"I’m satisfied on the fact that we should stay in the WSL, and that London City is now on the map. For a promoted team, and such a young team, it is satisfying."

On the ambitions of the club:

“I know if you asked this question to my owner, she would have preferred ten victories and no defeats, because she’s ambitious.

“We now need to keep working all the time and to take the potential of this team and see where we can go. You asked me about finishing in top four, and ambition is the heart of this project, so it is just a matter of time.”

On the media pressure:

“I need to protect my players from the pressure. With this amount of investment, the pressure is normal.

“Everybody expects results and performances, but at the same time I need to give them the space and the confidence to keep getting better and used to this league.

“With the media, I try to be as honest as possible. As an independent club in women’s football, the women are the priority, we have a different strategy.

“I believe we can be separated and have our own way, and we can encourage everyone to follow the footsteps of London City and it will be good for the global women’s game.”

If you had to choose one, who is the one player who really embodies this project?

“It is difficult to focus on just one player.

“If I want to put the light on someone who represents this project, my captain Kosovare Asllani.

“For such a good player with so much experience, her commitment is an example to follow. She’s older now but still works more, she’s always ready to help.

“She’s been with me since the beginning and really wants this project to be successful. She shows this even more this season than last season. She represents the dynamic we want to have. To be honest, I could mention most of my squad!"
