Super-subs seal victory at Palace

Substitutes Vanessa Susanna and Elizabeta Ejupi grabbed the goals as London City Lionesses came from behind to win a competitive encounter at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Trailing to Ashleigh Goddard's 65th minute strike, Susanna and Ejupi both came off the bench and made almost immediate impacts to turn the game on its head and continue our 100 per cent winning run on the road.

After a slow start, Juliette Kemppi shook off the lethargy by cutting on to her right foot and firing a shot which clipped the top of the crossbar.

At the other end, Lionesses keeper Lucy Thomas made a point-blank range block as Palace threatened from a corner.

On the stroke of half time, we worked an opening from a set piece of our own but Flo Fyfe's firmly struck volley was well saved.

Palace broke the deadlock when we failed to clear a cross and the ball broke for Goddard, who swept home.

But Susanna, on as a sub in the wake of that goal, drew us level almost instantaneously, sliding home the loose ball after a shot had been blocked.

Both sides pushed for a winner and Fyfe produced a magnificent block in the box to deny the unmarked Andria Georgiou a shooting chance.

That proved crucial as, with four minutes left, Ejupi swivelled and fired home Juliette Kemppi's cross to put the Lionesses in front.

There was still some defending to do and Palace hit the crossbar in injury time but we held on to secure three points and stay second in the Championship.

Lionesses: Thomas; Sampson, Priest (Neville 46), Mason; Fitzgerald, Short, Fyfe (Ejupi 78), Bennett, Cowan; Ayisi (Susanna 68); Kemppi.

Subs not used: Mackie, Balfour, Rossiter.
