London City Lionesses forward Sarah Ewens has received the 2022-23 Barclays Women’s Championship Golden Boot, sharing the accolade with Melissa Johnson of Charlton Athletic.
The London City No. 19 finished the season with 12 goals – tied with Johnson – in 19 appearances, which saw her secure the first-top scorer award of her career.
Ewens found the back of the net twice as a substitute on the final day of the season against Coventry United, helping the Lionesses to a historic 9-0 win.
“We’re disappointed that we didn’t reach our goal of promotion, but I think it was a great season when you look at what we had to overcome and the football that we played,” said the 31-year-old.
“Personally, I really enjoyed it. It was a really successful season, and it’s really nice to win the Golden Boot, but it’s so important to credit the players and staff around me who helped me score those goals.
“I feel like it’s a team achievement more than anything else.”
Ewens, who made three fewer appearances than her rivals in the race for the Golden Boot, also registered three assists in league play.
