Newcastle United 1, London City Lionesses 2.

London City Lionesses climb to the top of the Women’s Championship with a hard-fought victory over Newcastle United.

First half strikes from Izzy Goodwin and Sofia Jakobsson secured London City a vital three points in the windy conditions at Kingston Park, despite Newcastle piling on the pressure in the final stages.

London City had an early scare when Emily Orman made a great save to deny Shania Hayles within the opening minute.

However, the visitors got off to a flying start through Goodwin, who marked her return from injury by rifling a rocket into the right-corner to give the Pride the lead with just three minutes played.

Just two minutes later, Jakobsson came close to doubling the capital-sides advantage, curling a low shot just past the post.

With ten minutes on the clock, Orman was called into action again, making good reaction save down to her near post to deny Beth Lumsden.

Newcastle grew into the game and pushed for an equaliser, finding it in the 32nd minute through Lumsden. Emily Murphy made a direct run towards the London City defence, before playing a well-weighted through ball to Lumsden, who fired the ball into the roof of the net.

After coming close earlier in the game, Jakobsson restored London City’s lead on the stroke of half-time, cutting in on her right foot and whipping a curling shot into the bottom right corner.

In the second period, Newcastle threw caution to the wind and continued to push forward for a second goal. Orman was forced into a solid stop with 50 minutes played, beating away Lumsden’s powerful free kick attempt.

Teyah Goldie, Saki Kumagai and Megan Campbell defended well to keep Newcastle at bay throughout the second half, forcing Emily Murphy to try from range on multiple occasions, but she couldn’t find the target for the Magpies.

There were hearts in mouths for the Pride in the 97th minute when Lumsden rattled the crossbar from a wicked free kick, but the visitors held on to take all three points heading into the final three games of the season.

This victory propels London City Lionesses to the summit of the Barclays Women’s Championship, edging past Birmingham City, who we have now played the same number of games.
