There's just something about Lucy Fitzgerald at Ewood Park.
London City Lionesses' all-time appearance leader was at her usual Lancashire best on Sunday [15 September], opening the scoring for the second time in as many seasons at one of England's most storied stadiums.
Fitzgerald spoke exclusively with londoncitylionesses.com after the match; this is every word she said.
Fitzy, you were back in the line-up and back on the scoresheet today – how does that feel?
Obviously, I’m buzzing that I scored the goal and was back in the starting line-up. As a team, I think we really dominated the game. In an ideal world, we’d have put the match to bed much earlier, but we’re pleased with the win and the three points.
Their main threat was breaking quickly and I think we dealt with that really well. We had a lot of chances and we should’ve been more ruthless, but we felt comfortable in the game, had a lot of possession and picked up our first win of the season. It was good.
It was another new position for you – how was that?
It was fun scoring!
I like to be free and able to move around and link up with other players, so I enjoyed it. It’ll take time to fully get used to it and understand the role, but I think it suits me and I’m excited to see what comes this year.
After a long preseason, does this first win of the year feel especially satisfying?
It feels really nice, especially when you come away and it’s a long journey. I think, after a ten-week preseason, it feels really good and will help boost us all. Hopefully, it’s the first three points of many.
London City Lionesses return to Hayes Lane next Sunday [22 September], hosting Bristol City in the Barclays Women's Championship. Don't miss it.
