London City Lionesses secured their first-ever Barclays Women’s Super League points in style, with Izzy Goodwin’s brace sealing a 2–1 win over Everton under the Friday night lights at Goodison Park.

It took just 12 minutes for the Jocelyn Prêcheur’s side to breakthrough, with Goodwin latching onto a loose ball and rifling an unstoppable strike in off the crossbar.

The home side, led by Brian Sørensen, grew into the contest after the opener and tested City’s back line, but the travelling team managed to keep them out.

Wassa Sangaré stood tall with a commanding performance at the heart of defence, while Spanish goalkeeper Elene Lete produced a string of vital saves – denying Karen

Holmgaard’s long-range strike in the 22nd minute and keeping out a sharp effort from Kelly Gago just before the break.

London City, however, looked dangerous too in attack. Nikita Parris went close at the end of the first half, almost finishing off a slick move involving Jana Fernández and Goodwin.

The second half brought more magic from Goodwin. Just before the hour mark, a perfectly weighted pass from Lotta Lindström released Parris in-behind. The forward drove into space before squaring unselfishly for Goodwin, who rifled her second of the evening home.

Everton were handed a lifeline with 20 minutes left when Yūka Momiki converted from the penalty spot, with the Goodison crowd urging their side forward.

But Prêcheur’s organised defence paired with Lete’s inspired display between the sticks – including some remarkable second half saves – ensured the points travelled back to the capital.

The victory lifts London City up to eighth in the table, with confidence building after a challenging start to life in the top flight of English football.

Prêcheur was delighted with the performance: “It’s important for us, the girls and the team.

“Even if there are a lot of areas that we need to improve on, today was better than yesterday, better than last week.

“The biggest challenge for us is to adapt to this league.

“We have the capacity to do it, the players are talented enough to adapt, it’s just a matter of time.

“We were more organised defensively; there is more cohesion.

“The crowd supported brilliant on a Friday, but we stayed organised, and the bench helped us and brought what I expected to the pitch. We need to create a team, not just an XI.”
