Thomas saves help Lionesses to shoot-out win

Goalkeeper Lucy Thomas was the penalty shoot-out hero as London City Lionesses picked up an extra Continental Cup point after an impressive result at Bristol City on Sunday.

Leanne Cowan gave us the lead on 15 minutes with a shot that found the bottom corner from just outside the box.

The Lionesses dug deep to keep their WSL opponents at bay, with Ylenia Priest’s block denying Ebony Salmon and Thomas comfortably gathering a header and a shot.

But the hosts’ renewed efforts after the break brought their rewards, as sub Abi Harrison laid the ball in for Charlie Wellings, who swept home an equaliser.

More fine defensive work from Priest thwarted Harrison and Carla Humphrey’s effort from distance came back off the bar, to the Lionesses’ relief.

The shoot-out to decide who took the extra point on offer started badly when Juliette Kemppi’s kick against her former club was saved.

However, Vanessa Susanna and Lucy Fitzgerald both converted to keep us in it, before Thomas tipped Olivia Chance’s effort on to the post to restore parity.

Liz Ejupi and Poppy Wilson then scored for us, with Thomas saving from Humphrey to get the win.
