Goalkeeper Sophie Hillyerd has signed a new deal at London City Lionesses until the summer of 2027.

Hillyerd joined the club in July 2023 on a two-year deal from West Ham United, bringing with her a solid foundation built at Bristol City, Manchester United and Charlton Athletic, which earnt her an England U19s call-up.

Shortly after arriving, Hillyerd suffered a knee injury in a pre-season friendly that would keep her sidelined for the best part of two years. Three surgeries later, she marked her long-awaited return against FC Twente in pre-season, showcasing her resilience, discipline and determination.

With fantastic potential, and her incredible hard work and character apparent throughout a tough two-years at London City, Sophie Hillyerd signed a new contract ahead of our debut WSL season in the summer of 2025.

After returning to fitness, Hillyerd first joined Watford on a short-term loan in October 2025, keeping goal in the 5-0 FA Cup win over Actonians and the 1-1 league draw with Real Bedford.

She returned to Watford until the end of the season in January 2026 and was a key part of the side that lifted the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division crown.

Hillyerd said: “Everyone knows London City is a club going far. It’s changing a lot. I was here in the early stages of London City and the takeover, so I’ve really seen the development.

“I moved here when I was very young and got injured. It was tough. It was a real journey, one I didn’t think would come to an end in terms of my injury.

"The club have supported me through my injuries, three operations and trusted in my ability. It means a lot.

“The players we have are of such high calibre, so I really feel it’s a great place to continue my development.

“The last year has been brilliant, it’s been amazing to get back to playing and training every day. It feels so much better.

“Going on loan to Watford for the second part of last season has done the world of good for my confidence and experience in the game. They were fighting for promotion so my goal was to help them with that and we succeeded. It was a confidence builder for me, the squad were lovely and it was great to get back playing some game minutes.

“The growing attendances for us have been brilliant at London City. We are also grateful for the fans who have stuck by us. To have them with us is special and we are growing something special.”
