Nikita Runnacles: 'Bristol City win puts us in a position to push the pedal'

Nikita Runnacles was thrilled to lead London City Lionesses to within three points of the Barclays Women’s Championship summit, beating title rivals Bristol City 2-0 on Sunday [19 March].

Atlanta Primus scored twice in the second-half to fire the Lionesses to a statement win at Princes Park, with Sarah Ewens and Karin Muya providing the assists.

While the London City defence was forced to defend their box in the final minutes, the Robins were limited to only four shots – none of which were on frame – on a sand-shifting afternoon in the capital.

“That kind of performance is exactly what we know we can do,” explained Runnacles in a post-match media scrum.

“There have been a couple of games this season where we have missed that standard, but – on the whole – we know we can play with quality, flair, and excitement. It’s really pleasing that we got the result to match the performance – it was a brilliant afternoon for us.”

The Lionesses now trail Bristol City by three points in the race for promotion and have momentum on their side with five fixtures remaining.

“It’s no secret: the league table speaks for itself and we knew that three points today would put us in a really good position to put the pedal down and go for it,” said Runnacles.

“We’ll continue to focus game-by-game on what we need to do but the motivation is stronger than ever to achieve our aims between now and the end of the season.”
