London City Lionesses were defeated 2-0 in the Barclays Women’s Championship against Charlton Athletic at Princes Park on Sunday [1 October].
The Addicks scored twice in quick succession before the break, with Angela Addison and Carla Humphrey finding twine for Karren Hills’ squad.
Danielle Carter was inches away from breaking the deadlock earlier in the half, but was left disappointed as her shot faded wide of the post.
“It’s been a tough transition with a lot of new players and we’re obviously gutted to lose today,” explained Lois Heuchan, who was selected as the Pride’s Player of the Match on her first appearance of the season.
Heuchan produced an all-action performance at left-back, playing an important role as the Pride counterattacked down the flanks.
Paige Culver also made her debut, drawing into the backline alongside Heuchan, Maddi Wilde, and Emma Mukandi.
Head Coach Carolina Morace added: “The players did what we asked them, which was to be more aggressive. While the first half was disappointing, the second half was much better because we adjusted how we played.
“We are still very new as a team and are behind some of the other teams in our league in terms of preparation. When we prepared for this match, we knew that Charlton are one of the best-organised teams in the league and they showed that today.”
The Pride return to action next weekend, with a trip to Sheffield United in the Barclays Women’s Championship.
Morace's squad return to Princes Park on Wednesday 11 October, hosting Watford in the Continental Tyres League Cup.
