A Huge London Test

Two of the Barclays Women’s Super League’s in-form sides go head-to-head this afternoon.

We make the trip across the capital to face Tottenham Hotspur at Brisbane Road, with kick-off at 2pm in our final fixture before the October international break.

It is second against fourth in the early WSL standings, with both sides heading into this afternoon full of confidence.

Spurs remain unbeaten in the league and have been the competition’s most prolific attacking side so far, while we arrive having won four consecutive matches across all competitions.

A London derby. Two teams in form. A huge afternoon at Brisbane Road.

Here is your full match preview.

London City

Momentum has been building.

Since the narrow defeat at West Ham last month, we have responded with four consecutive victories across the Barclays WSL and Subway Players Cup.

Our latest league outing saw us return to Bromley and defeat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0, with Alexia Putellas opening her Barclays WSL account before Lucía Corrales wrapped up the points in stoppage time.

That result moved us onto nine points from our opening four league fixtures and was followed by another victory in the Subway Players Cup at Ipswich Town in midweek.

Three successive clean sheets have accompanied that winning run, giving Eder Maestre’s side another positive foundation heading into one of our toughest tests of the campaign so far.

Opposition Overview: Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham have been one of the standout sides of the opening month of the Barclays Women’s Super League season.

Martin Ho’s team sit second in the table with 10 points from their opening four games and remain unbeaten, having taken three wins and a draw.

More significantly, no WSL side has scored more.

Spurs have found the net 15 times in four league matches, including 11 goals across their last two WSL outings alone. A remarkable 7-0 victory away at Crystal Palace was followed by an equally convincing 4-0 home win against Aston Villa.

Their confidence carried into midweek too, as Olivia Holdt scored the winner in a 1-0 Subway Players Cup victory away at Brighton, extending Tottenham’s unbeaten start to the season.

There are threats throughout Martin Ho’s side.

Victoria Pelova has made an immediate impact following her summer arrival. The Netherlands international scored twice against Crystal Palace before producing another brace against Aston Villa, taking her to four league goals and placing her among the WSL’s leading scorers heading into this weekend.

Olivia Holdt is another player arriving in exceptional form. The Danish midfielder scored a hat-trick at Selhurst Park and followed it with the decisive goal against Brighton in midweek. She has four goals in six appearances across all competitions this season and has become increasingly influential in Spurs’ attacking play.

Norway international Signe Gaupset has also been central to Tottenham’s impressive start, providing creativity and drive through midfield, while summer signing Kirsty Hanson announced herself with two goals on her competitive debut against West Ham.

Spurs arrive to today’s fixture having also kept four consecutive clean sheets across all competitions, highlighting the balance Ho’s side have found during their strong start.

With two confident teams meeting in the capital, this afternoon promises to provide a serious test for both.

Last Time We Met

Our last visit to Brisbane Road produced a tight contest in the closing weeks of last season.

Spurs made a fast start, with Signe Gaupset opening the scoring after 13 minutes before Olivia Holdt doubled their advantage later in the first half.

We responded strongly after the break and Alanna Kennedy pulled one back late on to set up a tense finish, but Tottenham held firm to secure a 2-1 victory.

The two league meetings last season ultimately produced one home victory apiece.

Earlier in the campaign, we came out on top in a six-goal thriller in Bromley, with Freya Godfrey scoring twice and assisting as we recorded a memorable 4-2 victory over Spurs.

Nikita Parris also found the net on her 200th WSL appearance.
