London City Lionesses at the May and June Internationals

It’s been a busy few months for our London City Lionesses, with nine players heading out on international duty shortly after earning promotion to the Women’s Super League.

There were four players in action from London City in the UEFA Nations League, with all of them having more success on the European stage.

Starting with the Swedes, Kosovare Asllani and Sofia Jakobsson finished Group D of the Women’s Nations League unbeaten, after holding Italy to a 0-0 draw on Friday night and putting Denmark to the sword on Tuesday night, smashing them 6-1.

Both Asllani and Jakobsson featured from the bench against Italy, with Asllani starting against Denmark, to help win the group and secure a final four spot in the Women’s Nations League.

Miljana Ivanovic was also in Nations League B action for Serbia. They earned promotion to Nations League A, snatching a 97th minute 1-0 win over Hungary on Friday night, and holding Finland to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night.

Serbia finished at the top of their group, which earns them promotion to the Nations League A, with Ivanovic on the pitch for both crucial goals they scored in the May and June internationals.

The final London City Lioness in action was Megan Campbell, who utilised her world record-breaking long throw to get Ireland level against Turkey. Emily Murphy won it for the Girls in Green with just two minutes to play.

Ireland then beat Slovenia in their final group stage game, with Campbell coming off the bench to help see the game out, as they agonisingly missed out on top spot in Group 2 by goal difference.

London City’s Most Developed Player of the Season, 20-year-old Rofiat Imuran, earned a call-up to the Nigeria national team after a strong season at Hayes Lane. She faced fellow teammate Charlène Meyong as the Super Falcons took on Cameroon and turned out 2-0 winners.

Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah had a great start to Ghana national team duties, scoring on her debut for the Black Queens against Ivory Coast.

In a thrilling contest, the spoils were shared, as the game ended 3-3. They lost their second fixture 1-0 against the same opposition.

Grace Neville started for New Zealand in a friendly against Venezuela in a friendly, which they lost 3-1, however the Football Ferns rectified mistakes and reversed the result against the same opposition four days later, winning 2-1.

The Japanese national team came up short twice in their double-header against Brazil. Saki Kumagai featured in their first game and played 77 minutes in their 3-1 loss.

Shen Mengyu came off the bench for China in their 3-0 loss in a friendly to the USA.

Everyone at London City is proud to see our players' hard work recognised after a successful season in club football.
