Lionesses roar back against Rookettes

Goals from captain Ellie Mason, Liz Ejupi and Hannah Short gave Lionesses a deserved 3-0 win over Lewes last Sunday.

The victory lifted us to second in the FA Women’s Championship and the excellent performance was a perfect response to the 3-0 home reverse to London Bees the previous weekend.

Harley Bennett fired over the bar early on and Poppy Wilson also just cleared the crossbar, while at the other end Lionesses keeper Lucy Thomas was equal to Danielle Lane’s shot.

Mason then broke the deadlock on 37 minutes, shifting the ball away from two defenders in the box before drilling in at the near post for her first goal for the club.

The Rookettes’ efforts to get back into the game were hampered by a sad injury to striker Zoe Ness, who was stretchered off after a lengthy stoppage.

Two goals in the last 10 minutes, both from set pieces, sealed the deal for the hosts. First, Ejupi headed in Leanne Cowan’s free kick and then Short nodded home late on.
