London City To Face Tottenham In The First Of Three Continental Cup Group Matches

No question London City’s group draw for this year’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup is a tough one!

With three top Barclay’s FA Women’s Super League clubs to face: Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Chelsea; it’s going to be very challenging. Especially when you consider last year’s final was contested between Chelsea and Arsenal, with Chelsea taking the title 2-1.

The Lionesses will travel to The Hive tomorrow afternoon (Wed 7th October) to take on Spurs, who will line-up off the back of a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City at the weekend.

This is the first time, since London City Lionesses formed ahead of last season, that they will play against Tottenham in any competition and the squad are relishing the opportunity to test themselves against their WSL rivals.

Midfielder Poppy Wilson shared her thoughts about the match and group, “It is about testing ourselves against some of the best teams in the country. It's really exciting. We have Tottenham first, then Arsenal and Chelsea at home. So that's really exciting playing against the top players in the country and also a really good test for us as individuals and as a team."

I want to push myself as much as I can and get as far as I can on the international stage as well as pushing myself as far as I can. I want to develop and learn everyday, stretch myself outside of my comfort zone. But the most important thing is the team and the team performing well.”

Melissa Phillips Assistant Coach added, “We are excited about the opportunity to test ourselves against a top-quality WSL team on Wednesday. Tottenham are going to be an exceptional team, and we can use this match to prepare us for the tough road ahead in our league. The focus will always be upon our own performance and continuing to establish our identity as a team.”

The pressure will be on Spurs and all eyes will be watching to see if their star signing Alex Morgan will play her first competitive minutes for the north London outfit.

Follow the action from the 15:30 kick off via the London City Lionesses twitter account.

The remaining Conti Cup group games will both be played at Princes Park Stadium; Wednesday 4th November when the Lionesses play Arsenal and Wednesday 18th November against Chelsea with a 7:30pm kick-off.

All three games will be available to watch in full on the FA Player the following day.
